God loves a cheerful giver.
God loves the cranky ones, too.
So, we're a giving congregation.
We practice discerning generosity!
Wouldn’t it be great if, some day,
we were so good at being generous, that it came naturally,
without having to think about it?
Let’s make that a goal!
Like a child saying “thank you” without being told,
let’s become a church that says “thank you” to God
for God's many blessings,
through our extravagant giving
of all that we have and are,
without needing to be reminded!
"God's goal for us
is to become mature adults,
as each one does their part."
We Share Goodness
This church has a long history and strong commitment to justice, peace, and caring for those in need. Please DO scroll down. More than half of our mission giving is local, so that it can be "hands on." We give to:
Back to School Fair
we partner with non-profit helping agencies in our community, letting parents know there is help, locally, for enabling their families to grow stronger and healthier. We also give away backpacks and school supplies.
through World Vision, we sponsor a child from Kenya, with whom we share cards, pictures, and understanding between children here and there!
Church Without Walls
In cooperation with and at the Parish Cupboard, First offers brief worship and noontime lunch outside to anyone who wants to join in on the Fourth Sundays of Feb, April, June, Aug, Oct, and December.
Church World Service
We participate in the CROP Hunger Walk and the Mother's and Father's Day Tools & Blanket Program. CWS serves the poor around the world and in the local community.
Day Camp - Helping Children Grow
In the summer, we offer a free half-day Day-Camp to the neighborhood, including breakfast and lunch, for five consecutive weeks.
Summer Day Camp gives funds raised to Heifer, which provides animals and training in sustainable agriculture to families around the world.
Halloween Party for the Neighborhood
Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM)
We give globally through the United Church of Christ, to help support countless educational, outreach, and crisis ministries here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in our nation, and in our world. Through OCWM, monies and missionaries are all over the world, seeking justice, and bringing healing and wholeness for those most in need, in Jesus' name!
We sponsor food drives, donate non-perishable food, and raise funds for our local food pantry and soup kitchen. The Parish Cupboard, located at 1023 Main Street in West Springfield, serves our neighbors in West Springfield, Agawam, and Feeding Hills.
UCC Special Offerings
We give to the World in times of trial, through the United Church of Christ: Neighbors in Need, One Great Hour of Sharing, & Strengthen the Church.
West Springfield Parish Association
WSPA Ecumenical Outreach meetings are held at various churches in the community on the first Saturday morning of each month.
YWCA Women's Shelters and Teen Parenting Programs
We host an annual collection of baby items at our "Layette Shower."
In addition, First Congregational Church holds a year-round "A Greater Gift" Fair Trade Sale, with gift items and chocolate from SERRV.
Local and global ministries, such as Habitat for Humanity, Hospice, the Salvation Army, and West Side Helping Hands are supported through our financial gifts.
Kid's Back to School Fair
On a Monday in August, First Church UCC holds its annual
Kid's Back to School Fair for our whole community. Usually about 100 kids - preschool through high school - are given school supplies and backpacks. Families enjoy refreshments, a MassHealth information table, a book giveaway, other family support resources, and a visit by the West Springfield Fire Department and Police Dept. The First Church Worship Team offers prayers to anyone who wants or needs a blessing.
Many, many church members and friends contribute supplies and
volunteer to make the Fair a success! The church would like to thank
Big Y and
Stop 'N Shop grocery stores
for donated gift cards that provided many of the refreshments.
First Church supports education and literacy not only with the Back to School Fair, but by offering a Community Play Group during the school year. The Play Group, which is free and open to any family with infants, toddlers, or preschoolers, meets from 10 to 11:30 am from Sept through mid-June.
