Worship 9am Summer Sundays
Here's a little bit about First Church in Worship:
Style: casual, warm, vibrant, non-threatening
to give God praise;
to get better at being folks who love God;
to show that love in and to the world
Welcome: everyone, no exceptions!
This is what we do
new songs, that nudge us into God's presence;
hymns through the ages,
that teach us the historic Christian faith
we 'fess up to the ways we mess up;
we receive God's mercy and pardon;
we pray for ourselves and for others and for
our hurting world; we bless each other;
we offer ourselves to be useful to God
and to others.
to the scriptures;
to the preacher;
and to each other;
yearning to hear the Spirit speak truth
to us, through us, and in spite of us.
because God is worthy
and because it puts our own lives
We go out:
blessed, to live as apprentices of Jesus,
and walking in humility.
We keep a Gratitude Journal, where you are encouraged to record your specific thanks to God. During the closing song, you may choose to receive laying on of hands and prayers from the Deacons.
Twice a month we also celebrate at the Lord's Table, sharing the bread and the cup. Anyone who wants to draw close to God is welcome to participate.
Our time at the table is
a remembrance of Christ's self-giving,
an affirmation of our oneness in service with him, and a foretaste of the heavenly banquet
Jesus taught us about.
The bread does have gluten.
The juice is Welch's - unfermented grape juice.
An Adult Choir ministers to us
weekly during Sunday worship.
A Children's Choir rehearses
and ministers in worship about 5 or 6 times a year.
Always welcome: folks who are willing to "make a joyful noise!"
learning to pray
Each week, the congregation prays together. See the pages, below, for tips on how to pray.
Each week, the congregation is invited to memorize one verse from scripture. We want to treasure the promises of God, and "write them" on our hearts.
